As part of our commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Heat Network sector, this June the Diverse Heat Network (DHN) our focus is on “Uplifting Queer Voices: Empowering LGBTQ+ Inclusion in the Heat Network Industry.”
We are delighted to share a special video interview conducted by Annalisa Guidolin, a DHN champion and an Energy Engineer at Buro Happold. Annalisa sat down with Katie-Elouise Shepherd, a prominent figure in Building Equality UK and Chair of the Sheffield City Region. Katie serves on the Building Equality National Executive Committee, a coalition of construction consultants, engineers, developers, contractors, and institutions united by a common goal: to foster LGBTQ+ inclusion across the construction, engineering, and built environment sectors.
During this insightful interview, Katie shared her motivations for joining Building Equality and the vital objectives of the initiative. Building Equality’s efforts are centered around creating a welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ individuals within the traditionally conservative fields of construction and engineering. Their work includes developing educational resources, organising events, and fostering a network of allies committed to inclusivity. Katie highlighted some of the significant strides the initiative has made, such as developing inclusive policies, providing training sessions, and establishing a supportive community that champions the rights and recognition of LGBTQ+ colleagues.
This interview not only sheds light on the impactful work being done by Building Equality but also serves as a call to action for other organisations within the Heat Network industry to step up, partner, and incorporate similar inclusive practices in their operations.
At the DHN, we believe that the richness of diverse experiences and perspectives is crucial to our industry’s success. We are dedicated to supporting and amplifying such initiatives that help attract, retain, and empower talented individuals from all walks of life.
Let us take this opportunity to learn, engage, and be inspired as we work together towards a more inclusive and equitable future in the Heat Network industry.
